Thank You, Ray Kalil
Nearly 50 years ago, Ray Kalil and Harris Hollin fought alongside each other in Korea. Ray speaks of the backup support that Harris, leading his men, provided to Ray and his platoon.

Now, it is Ray Kalil that is playing an important role in supporting CFXF through his own generous contributions as well as gifts which he solicited from his friends and associates which have resulted in thousands of dollars for CFXF.

Loyal to his country as well as to his friends, Ray continues to serve with the Tennessee State Guard as Aviation Commander.

Recently Published Papers by Dr. Michael Fry

The University of Washington’s Lawrence Loeb and his Israeli counterpart, Professor Mickey Fry, of Technion-Israel Institute of Technology are studying the effects of the deterioration of DNA replication, which leads to the fragile X syndrome, a genetic disorder. Loeb says, “The connection with Israel was vital and beneficial to both sides.” The research team has published more than 25 scientific papers and co-authored a book. Dr. Michael Fry

The following papers were published by Dr. Fry’s laboratory with the acknowledged support of Conquer Fragile X Foundation.

1. Weisman-Shomer, P., Cohen, E. and Fry, M. Interruption of the fragile X syndrome expanded sequence d(CGG)n by interspersed d(AGG) trinucleotides diminishes the formation and stability of d(CGG)n tetrahelical structures. Nucleic Acids Res. 28: (2000) 1535-1541

2. Uliel, L., Weisman-Shomer, P., Oren-Jazan, H., Newcomb, T., Loeb, L.A., and Fry, M. Human Ku antigen tightly binds and stabilizes a tetrahelical form of the fragile X syndrome d(CGG)n expanded sequence. J. Biol. Chem. 275: (2000) 33134-33141

3. Kamath-Loeb, A.S., Loeb, L.A., Johansson, E., Burgers, P.M.J., and Fry, M. Interactions between the Werner syndrome helicase and DNA polymerase facilitate copying of tetraplex and hairpin structures of the d(CGG)n trinucleotide repeat sequence. J. Biol. Chem. 276: (2001) in press

Fundraising Golf Tournament Planned

The Golf Tournament Fundraising Committee met recently at The Governors Club to formulate plans for a fall event. The effort will be headed up by Kyle Henderson and assisting him will be Wende Banks, Gail Henderson and Barkley Henderson. Reception and Dinner for CFXF Parents and Grandparents

In NovemberMatthew Hollin’s grandparents, Harris and Sande Hollin, and Mr. and Mrs. William Bell hosted a reception and dinner for CFXF families and research supporters. It was held at the beautiful landmark Colony Hotel on Palm Beach. There were many comments from the guests and two of those particularly reflect the value of the “get-together”.

“Thank you ! We have had a great time venting and bragging and laughing !!”

“Thank you so very much, Harris. It felt so good to meet and share with other families going through the same experience. It felt so good to not have to explain.”
