CONGRESS
APPROVES BILL
EXTENDING RESEARCH
Working with FRAXA Research Foundation's Washington
lobbyist, David Busby, Conquer Fragile X Foundation
took an active part in urging passage of the following
legislation through letters written to legislators
by our network of families and supporters.
On Wednesday, September 27th, Congress approved
a measure that would expand research on the genetic
disorder Fragile X. The measure was part of a
larger bill that expands research for a broad
range of childhood diseases and disorders. Backed
by Sen. John Edwards (D-NC), the provisions related
to Fragile X call for the National Institute of
Child Health and Human Development to establish
at least three research centers, at an annual
cost of approximately $10,000,000, devoted to
the disorder. Edwards said, "Fragile X is
the leading cause of mental retardation, but many
people have never heard of it. We must raise awareness
about Fragile X and encourage research efforts."
Earlier this year, Edwards successfully pushed
the Senate to pass a resolution declaring July
22 as Fragile X Awareness Day.
